If you're not familiar with the tradition of Setsubun, it marks the beginning of spring. The name literally means 'seasonal division', referring to the day just before the first day of spring in the traditional calendar, known as Setsubun; in Japan it will be celebrated on February 3, but we'll be holding our party a couple weeks later.
One of the most notable features of Setsubun is Mamemaki, the throwing of beans either out the front door or at an Oni, or demon, to chase away evil spirits. Here's a Wikipedia entry that explains Setsubun and Mamemaki:
