Remembering our friend, Maria Allen

To All of the DSCI Family:

It is with great sadness that we are announcing the passing on Nov. 3, 2020, of our beloved member and former chair of the Potenza Italy committee, Maria Scordo Allen.

Maria had been an integral part of lives of “Everyone and Everything Italian” in the Denver community for decades. Among her many endeavors, Maria was the Honorary Vice Consul of Italy, Chair of the DSCI Potenza Committee, and founding member of “CIAO”, the Italian American Chamber of Commerce. She was vitally involved in the student organization “Il Circolo Italiano” and the promotion of the teaching of Italian Language in the Denver Public Schools. Maria was instrumental in the establishment of the Italian Cultural Center in Colorado and in 2004 was awarded Knighthood by the Italian government with the title of Knight of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity.

Maria’s energy was boundless and her love for “all things Italian” was infectious. We fondly remember her tasty Italian dishes at countless celebrations, her tireless organization of the silent auction items at our numerous bocce tournaments, her years of participation in the “Festival Italiano”, and her efforts to link us with the Potenza lodge and the mayor’s office in Potenza, Italy. The list goes on and on as does our appreciation and admiration.

Maria will be sorely missed, but her years of work and accomplishments will continue to stand as living tributes to her life’s work.

We share this loss with her surviving sons Frank and Walter who often helped her at DSCI events and celebrations.

With Great Sorrow, Respect and Thanks,

The DSCI Potenza Committee and Board of Directors
